Naturism/nudism, from free-hiking to cycling to beach volley ball to camping and social events, has been is and will continue to be a minority pursuit globally. The treatment of minorities of all types is a measure of the health of a society over all. It appears that civics, in particular, is in poor health in the USA. Other minorities, from women requiring specific medical procedures to children wanting to read award winning books, are also under threat in much of the country - an odd turn of events in "the land of the free"!

Not to be all about doom and gloom ... I'm not in the USA often but last September I was able to free-hike and swim au natural in Glacier National Park (Montana) during warm weather on a multi-day hike with a friend. Our encounters with park staff and other hikers were mundane or punctuated with humour. We chitchatted about the route conditions, campsite options, distances, .... All is not lost.

Outdoor saunas are wonders, especially during the winter after dark. The intimacy and community they create during shared clothes-free experiences is amazing. There is also nothing quite like being so hot you can roll in the snow, or hop in a lake while whooping starkers with friends at -18 C (0 F). Uncomplicated child like joy! Never turn down an invitation to participate, and bring a comestible or a tipple to share.

Timothy, thanks for your writing.

I wish the traditional sauna culture was stronger here in New Zealand.
